CDOT Region 3 Post Boulevard Roundabout
Avon, Colorado
September 2022 - July 2025
The redesigned US 6 & Post Boulevard Roundabout in Avon transformed a high-crash, confusing intersection into a safer, more intuitive gateway for residents, visitors, and freight traveling through this critical mountain corridor. Working in partnership with CDOT Region 3, Stolfus reimagined the existing roundabout as a compact, modified single-lane design that reduced driver hesitation, simplified movements, and significantly improved pedestrian and bicycle safety. The design corrected deficient geometry, clarified lane assignments, and enhanced visibility at crossings—directly addressing the factors that had contributed to frequent crashes and near-misses.
Delivered on schedule and $1.1 million under the original construction budget, the project demonstrates how thoughtful, context-sensitive design can achieve measurable safety and operational gains while respecting community needs and constraints. Strategic innovations such as reducing conflict points, integrating ADA-compliant crossings with RRFBs, accommodating large vehicles through carefully designed truck aprons, and avoiding costly bridge reconstruction allowed the team to maximize value without sacrificing performance. Recognized with a Merit Award from ACEC- Colorado, the completed roundabout now serves as a model for mountain communities seeking practical, cost-effective solutions that enhance safety, support multimodal access, and deliver lasting public benefit.
