City of Thornton 104th Avenue Widening (CO 92 to US 85)
Thornton, Colorado
September 2021 - Present
104th Avenue (Colorado Blvd to US-85) is a critical east-west connection through northern Denver. The City of Thornton, Adams County, Commerce City, and CDOT identified improvement needs for a section of 104th Avenue that creates a pinch point between I-25 and E-470. As a Colorado state highway (CO-44), the road must meet current and future needs of multimodal users. Stolfus is working with these agencies by designing a two-lane widening in each direction, with a center median, bike lanes, and multi-use trails. Riverdale Rd and McKay Rd intersections require signal modifications and expansion to accommodate additional turn lanes, while the Brighton Rd intersection needs signalization. Stolfus has worked closely with the drainage and environmental group to evaluate floodplain, water quality and environmental impacts to determine the preferred approach for the roadway cross-section and profile. The Stolfus team also helped the City prepare a successful RAISE Grant Application to help fund these improvements.
