CDOT R4 US 287 Safety Improvements North of Ted’s Place

Colorado

March 2023 - Present

Stolfus supported CDOT’s efforts to implement safety improvements at locations where they have the greatest impact in reducing the occurrence of crashes resulting in severe injury or death while also identifying any systemic safety needs related to the built environment and transportation system users. A corridor safety study was completed to assess the location, magnitude, and nature of safety problems and recommend cost-effective countermeasures. With a higher-than-average crash rate, this corridor was a strong candidate for various improvements. Potential safety improvements considered and recommended included passing lanes, wildlife signage, signing and striping maintenance, turn movement warning signage, increased shoulder lengths, snow fencing, resurfacing and crack sealing, cross-slope correction and intersection improvements. Stolfus prepared an evaluation matrix to transparently prioritize improvements for implementation as justified by various criteria, The magnitude of the safety problem, countermeasure effectiveness, systemic safety improvement, public and agency feedback, and project benefit-cost
